Upload cache content back to the server?

Added by Bushio Brao over 1 year ago

Hi,

I got myself into a muddle and would really appreciate a bit of help to get this sorted out.

Brief explanation:

For over 10 years, I have had several e-mail accounts with an IMAP service provider, saving well over 100,000 messages into hundreds of folders.

Recently, the provider suffered a catastrophic failure and took over a week to get their service back online.

When I logged in with Sylpheed, I noticed that any folder I clicked on was updated to a LOWER message number than it was before.

Luckily, I had a backup of my local Sylpheed folder from just before the crash and it turns out the provider lost about 10% of all my messages. I was able to provide specific examples, sending them messages (including all headers) found in my backup and asked if they could find them anywhere on their servers and they said: Sorry, no trace of this. I also asked if they could use my backup to reinstate the missing messages on their servers and this does not seem to be possible either (Honestly, it makes me furious that they have so little regard for the value of my data!).

In order not to complicate things further, I have not sorted any e-mail away from my inboxes since the crash, but cannot keep accumulating them for a long time.

The current situation is this:

- I have my e-mail accounts on the server, which are incomplete due to the crash.
- I have an online computer with a Sylpheed cache set that is partly updated from the server (i.e. I have not clicked on each individual folder yet, which would, as explained above, change the cache data to match the server, just eliminating those messages it cannot find on the server)
- I have an offline computer that has the most complete Sylpheed cache set. This is, however, not fully complete. Some messages are just known to exist but have not been downloaded. But it is the best record of my data set as it should be.

How do I get all this into a working setup? There is now way I can compare and identify the missing messages by hand, due to the sheer number. Ideally, I am looking for a script that comapres my old Sylpheed cache with the IMAP contents on the server and then copies anything that is in the backup but not on the server into a local mailbox, including the full folder structure.

I would then have a full view what is lost and would be able to upload the missing messages (hopefully).

Any ideas?

Many, many thanks for your help.

This achieves several goals: it eases the load of the server that doesn't need to serve by being closer to the client, i.e., it takes less time to transmit the resource back. It likewise improves offline browsing of cached content.
