Description

Dear Mr. Yamamoto,

would there be any chance you could make an official Sylpheed PPA for Ubuntu?

Hello,

Currently there is no plan to provide an official Sylpheed PPA.

Hello,

thank you very much for your reply.

Could you please elaborate why there is no plan to provide an official Sylpheed PPA?

I only found the following PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~klaus-vormweg/+archive/sylpheed

which clearly states it's "unnofficial".

I would rather want to have a official PPA from the official developer (you) though.

Or do you suggest a different way to update Slypheed in Ubuntu, other than a PPA?

I think that each distribution's package maintainer basically should take responsibility.
But it is a good idea to create Sylpheed team on launchpad and release nightly or beta version only for testing through PPA from time to a time. (Even though, there is a big problem who does it?)

https://launchpad.net/~sylpheed (We can use ~sylpheed!)

Why?

The Sylpheed developer(s) are releasing Sylpheed installers for Microsoft Windows and do not say that it's Microsoft's responsibility to release Sylpheed installers/updates...

So why do Sylpheed developers not release a Ubuntu PPA then? Why doing it for Windows but not for Ubuntu? Doesn't make sense to me.

It might be an overstatement about "should take responsibility". I should say "I hope distribution's package is actively maintained". Anyway, the current situation that distribution provides old version of Sylpheed is not changed....

They (Sylpheed developer) just entrusts distribution's maintainer, IMHO.
So, I commented an idea about creating Sylpheed team which focus on more experimental purpose. It may be better in point of view which does not overlap against distribution maintainer's stable package.

Curremtly I don't have enough time to release and maintain packages for PPA or Ubuntu Software Center.
It is very welcome that someone is willing to do that, of course.

if you do not have the time to make your own PPA, what about this already existing PPA then:

https://launchpad.net/~klaus-vormweg/+archive/sylpheed
https://launchpad.net/~klaus-vormweg/+archive/ppa

?

Maybe you could get in touch with this guy and make sure his PPA is trustworthy and okay to use for everyone (i.e. making this PPA more official)?

Regards

Look what I just found:

Of course, we will try as much as possible to push all the fixes to
official repositories, especially the critical ones. However, I realized
that we should also offer some
safe-updates-but-still-too-much-for-the-official-repo to our users during
this time. That's why I'm currently preparing those updates in
https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-dev/+archive/staging (not sure we should
keep this PPA for this purpose, but for now it should do the work). I have
in mind :

- New version of sylpheed (there is 1 or 2 fixes I'm also preparing for the
official repo)

[...]
