Description

Instead of a global preference in "Common Preferences/Receive", make "Auto-check new mail every XX minutes" an account preference. This way each account can be enabled/disabled and, eventually, set a different check interval. Original reporter comment about the issues of current global preference:

[...] it causes problems anyway for certain users. User may have accounts
configured that are not desirable for a regular check: i.e. alternative
accounts that should only be consulted explicitly because they are meant
to be read and processed somewhere-else and deleting the messages daily
on server is unacceptable, or accounts that receive messages that aren't
meant to be read regularly, either because they would clutter the inbox
or are old accounts that should only be fetched on request.

This should have been marked as a feature request not a bug ;-)

At least there is an account option: "'Get all' checks for new messages on this account"
which enables/disables mail check on periodical auto-check.
